La Vida Jazz Band
New Orleans in the Netherlands
Release 2006
Little Label LL009

This is a feature from the wonderful Tenorsax player Sam Lee. It’s recorded in Milano, Italy in 1989. Sam plays and sings real inspired in here. The rhythm section is led by pianist Emile van Pelt with his astonishing left hand boogie woogie timing which takes us back to the legendary Hi Ho Silver recording from Duke Burell and the Louisiane Shakers. But this is a white band and that’s really remarkable! The La Vida is one of the few white bands in the world who can play with such a roughness that this type of numbers should have. Unfortunately the sound quality is a bit poor because it was taped from a long distance with one simple microphone and besides the computer MP3 conversion will not make it better! Nevertheless I’m sure that if you listen through that, you can pick up the fine atmosphere that Sam Lee and the La Vida has created that day in Milano!

Audioclip: Hi Ho Silver

On the CD there is one number without a quest so that one can hear the La Vida on his own This track is recorded recently in October 2005 during the Doctor Jazz Reunion in Wageningen. It shows the La Vida playing this tune in a smooth collective manner. The banjo solo from the international well known and famous banjo player Wouter Nouwens is very tastefull and of course played in his own original style.

My first contact with Jim Robinson must have been when I was a little baby! My father at that time was a famous Dutch trombonist and a real Robinson adept. So I grew up with LP’s and tapes from New Orleans music and especially those with the trombone of Jim Robinson. More

Trummy Young with Teddy Buckner & his Orchestra
April 1958

I consider myself a lucky man because I’ve seen and heard Trummy Young! In 1975 when I was eleven years old, my family and I went to a concert of the Chris Barber Jazz Band. When we arrived at the hall we discovered by coincidence that the Barber Band had a special quest: Trummy Young! By that time I didn’t know much about Trummy only that he had played with Louis Armstrong.
